The Big Dry

Many species call Zambia’s Luangwa Valley home, but it has one of the toughest dry seasons imaginable-no rain for seven months and extreme temperatures. Yet for some animals, the dry season means opportunity.

It’s October in Zambia’s Luangwa Valley-the hottest and harshest time of year. There has been no rain since April and desperate animals are drawn to the only remaining source of water in the valley: the dwindling Luangwa River.

When the rain finally arrives, it’s a deluge. Plants flourish and animals thrive.
